7047 Franklin Avenue, Hollywood - previously the Landmark Motor Hotel (now called the Highland Gardens Hotel), room 105: where Janis Joplin accidentally overdosed on heroin in October of 1970. *

865 Comstock Avenue, Los Angeles (on the Westwood/Beverly Hills border): the apartment where comic actor Freddie Prinze (star of "Chico & the Man") shot himself in 1977. He left behind a suicide note which read: "I must end it. There's no hope left. I'll be at peace."

8563 Holloway Drive (just off the Sunset Strip), in West Hollywood: the two-story apartment complex where actor Sal Mineo ("Rebel Without a Cause") was stabbed to death by a robber in the carport behind his apartment building, in February of 1976.

1221 N. King's Road, West Hollywood: the penthouse apartment where actor Jack Cassidy died in a fire in 1976. Cassidy was the former husband of actress Shirley Jones, and the father of both David Cassidy (star of TV's "Partridge Family") and of pop singer Shaun Cassidy. He went to sleep while smoking a cigarette, igniting the couch on which he was sleeping.

2552 Glen Green Terrace, in the Hollywood Hills: the house where actor Pete Duel, who played "Hannibal Hayes" (alias "Joshua Smith") on the Western TV series "Alias Smith & Jones," put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger in 1971.

11425 S. Crenshaw Blvd., Inglewood: former site of Mel's Sporting Goods store, where Patty Hearst was captured on videotape brandishing a rifle alongside her SLA kidnappers during an armed robbery. The incident was dramatized in the movies "Patty Hearst" and "Abduction." The store is now closed, but a bullet hole is still visible in a light pole outside the store. *

1466 E. 54th Street (near Compton Ave.), Los Angeles: those same six SLA members (minus Patty Hearst) were killed on May 17, 1974, in a fire resulting from a police siege which burned their South Los Angeles hideout (a one-story, stucco house) to the ground. Today, the only visible reminder is the fire-blackened trunk of a palm tree near the vacant lot where the house used to be. *

    * locations marked by an asterisk could be located in a high-crime district. Exercise reasonable caution.
