The Location
: Dexter captures the Midnight Mangler.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

A. A public street.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

A. 151 72 St., in Seattle, Washington.

Q. When did we see it on the show?
A. In episode one of season two.

This is a very short scene of Dexter capturing a Seattle serial killer nicknamed the Midnight Mangler.

It is a brief flashback to what happened during the three year time- jump between seasons one and two.

We see the killer (played wrestler Chris Jericho) walking down a dark street, heading menacingly towards a lone woman standing in the street.   At the last second, Dexter appears behind him , inject in the neck M99,    rendering him conscious. Dexter drags the heavy killer towards an alleyway.

( This is followed by an even shorter scene of Dexter killing him with an ax. )

Q. What is it actually in real life?

A. A public street.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. It's not in Seattle.

You'll find the street and the adjacent alleyway in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.

They shot this on N. 5th Street, in Brooklyn, between Wythe St and Kent Avenue.

Google Maps lists it as 43-29 N 5th St.

The approximate GPS location is 40.718970, -73.962580 .

Here is a matching StreetView of the street and the alley entrance :

Here is an aerial photo of the location.  And here is a map link.

 Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A. This was tricky.

On the one hand, there were a lot of great Getty photos, showing them filming the scene, and the captions on those photos identified it as somewhere in Brooklyn.  So at least I knew that much.

But on the other hand, there was a sign on the wall nearby, which read “151 N 72 St.”, and when I checked, there was no such address as. “N 72 St.” in Brooklyn, which had caused me to waste a lot of time looking for it.

I found two amateur videos of the scene being filmed, but it was night, and the street is fairly non-descript, so they didn’t offer any major clues.

Fortunately, I eventually found a great video posted by a girl (Kiki) who had stumbled across Dexter filming in the alleyway. She spotted David Zayas (Batista) in that alley/parking lot and had filmed the location.

Here  is that video:

However, she wasn’t on the same side of the alley as where they actually shot the scene with the Mangler. Instead, she was at the opposite end of the alley, on 4th Street, looking into the alley which they seem to be using at a staging area.

Her video included a Dexter no-parking sign posted on a telephone pole nearby, which listed the surrounding streets. That allowed me to narrow it down to just a few blocks in Williamsburg.

That video also revealed an identical sign at that 4th Street end of the alley, as seen in the episode.

Max Bass The video showed enough detail of the surrounding buildings that, along with the list of streets, I was eventually able to pinpoint the alleyin Williamsburg

When I took a close look at the StreetView of that alley entrance. Once I did, I found the identical sign at that 5th Street end, except that instead of reading “151 N 72 St.”, this real-life sign  read “151 Kent Ave” , I realized they had faked the sign by changing the street name.

That wasn’t completely surprising, because I had heard that the scene (in the context of the show) was supposed to take place in Seattle..

despite  the sign, The alleyway entrance where they filmed the scene isn't on Kent Ave, It is located behind the building 151 Kent Ave, and runs between 4th St and 5th Street .  The Mangler scene was filmed at the alley's 5th Street entrance of this alley.

I studied the details of that
StreetView until I was certain that it was a perfect match for the location.
